Q: Working Where Makes You More Creative?

WORKING IN A CLUTTERED SPACE MAKES YOU MORE CREATIVE: New research finds that working at a cluttered desk makes you more creative. Researchers from the University Minnesota found this by having participants fill out questionnaires in one of two rooms. Both rooms had the same view, furniture and amount of sunlight, but one was cluttered while one was clutter-free. Participants were also given the option of eating an apple or chocolate and offered the chance to give money to a charity. In the creativity test participants again sat in one room or the other, but had to think up ten uses for a tennis ball. Researchers found that those sitting in the cluttered room had more interesting and creative ideas for use of the tennis ball than the other participants. They also found those working in a clutter-free environment were more likely to choose to eat an apple rather than a chocolate bar, and they were also more likely to donate to charity. One researcher said, “Whether you have control over the tidiness of the environment or not, you are exposed to it and our research shows it can affect you.” (Daily Mail)
