Q: Researchers from the University of Miami say they are now using these to help them predict the severity of hurricanes?

A: Sharks/Fish

SHARKS MAY HELP RESEARCHERS PREDICT HURRICANES: Sharks may help researchers predict hurricanes. You read that correctly. Researchers from the University of Miami tagged some sharks and some fish with satellite-linked sensors that measure ocean temperature, depth, light level and salinity back in 2010. When reviewing the data from the sea creatures, they realized the animals were following ocean water that was 79 degrees Fahrenheit. Researchers say the way the animals swim could change the way forecasters predict the severity of hurricanes and tropical storms, as 79 degrees is the lower bound temperature for tropical storms. One researcher says, “They’re the boots on the ground. They’re able to make precise measurements that can be used by these forecasters. The cool part is that these animals all live and occupy different habitats and areas, so it allows you to monitor deeper water, different areas.” (CBS News)
