After Hurricane Scams

Nothing makes me want to throat punch someone more than when they try to scam you! Naturally, after big events, the scammers come out of the wood work to try and take your money. So with Hurricane Florence here are the scams you need to be on the lookout for!

These tips come from (Reader’s Digest / Consumerist)

Fake rental listings:  Make sure you’ve seen the rental in person before you hand over any money.  Don’t give them any information over the Internet, don’t pay them in iTunes cards or gift cards and don’t wire anyone money.

Fake contractors: Check for a license and proof of insurance.  Be wary of anyone who says they have a FEMA “endorsement,” since FEMA doesn’t certify contractors.  And never pay for work up front.

Fake charities. These really make me angry. There ARE people and websites presenting themselves as legitimate charity organizations.  If a charity organization reaches out to you, don’t be afraid to ask them for more details.  even better, don’t give to anyone that isn’t an established charity.

Any other tips we need?

Sherry
