1. Change Could be Coming to the Top of Afton Mountain
AUGUSTA COUNTY, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The summit of Afton Mountain, once a bustling tourist hub with a hotel and restaurant, has fallen into disrepair over the years. Following the passing of owner James F. “Phil” Dulaney, Augusta County is partnering with the property owners to pursue a Virginia Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for a master plan to revitalize the site.

2. Virginia’s Exit from California Electric Vehicle Mandate Begins Next Week
RICHMOND, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW/AP) – Virginia will no longer comply with California’s electric vehicle mandate as of January 1, 2025. The mandate, originally requiring new cars to gradually transition to electric-only models, was formally rejected in June 2024 by Governor Glenn Youngkin. Citing a fundamental concern about government control over consumer choices, Youngkin stated that Virginians deserve freedom when selecting the vehicles best suited for their needs. Natural and Historic Resources Secretary Travis A. Voyles noted that Virginia will now follow federal standards rather than adhering to California’s regulations.

3. New Laws That Go Into Effect on January 1: Changes to Virginia’s Auto Insurance Requirement
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Starting January 1, 2025, Virginia will increase the minimum auto insurance liability coverage limits. The new requirements set coverage at $50,000 for bodily injury or death per person, $100,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage per accident. For policies issued or renewed on or after that date, every motor vehicle owner’s policy must clearly list the covered vehicles, extend coverage to the insured and anyone using the vehicle with permission, and protect against damages from accidents.

4. Governor Youngkin Issues an Executive Order Aimed at Reforming Reentry in Virginia
RICHMOND, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Governor Glenn Youngkin has launched Executive Order 36, introducing the Stand Tall – Stay Strong – Succeed Together Initiative to reduce recidivism across the Commonwealth. The plan involves multiple agencies and service providers to better support individuals returning from incarceration. Under the initiative, more than 3,000 returning citizens have already gained employment, while over 7,000 have acquired health insurance since April 2023.  The executive order further expands assessments, treatment programs, and partnerships to ensure successful reentry and healthier futures.

5. Boyd Tinsley Arrested on DUI Charges After Traffic Crash in Albemarle County
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) — Boyd Tinsley, formerly of the Dave Matthews Band, was taken into custody following a two-vehicle crash near the intersection of Seminole Trail (U.S. 29) and Woodbrook Drive. Albemarle County Police responded to the scene around 5:54 p.m. on Monday and confirmed no injuries. Tinsley was transported to the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail on suspicion of DUI, then released on bail pending a court appearance.
