CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW)- Virginia softball took down Georgia Tech in a thrilling series at Palmer Park this past weekend. In a pitchers’ duel, the Cavaliers took an early lead on a single and took advantage of an error by the visitors in the first two innings. That proved all they needed thanks to stellar pitching by Julia Cuozzo and Courtney Layne, earning a 2-1 victory.
Virginia fell in 10 innings in Game 2 7-5, but an Eden Bigham complete game won them the series in Game 3, 5-1.
Following the cancellation of their Tuesday game with JMU, Virginia heads to Syracuse for a three-game series beginning Friday, March 20.
Lacrosse
No. 21 women’s lacrosse went on a tiger hunt over the course of last week, battling Princeton on Wednesday and Clemson on Saturday. No. 19 Princeton came to Klockner and gave Virginia a battle, but the Hoos finished victorious, with a relentless attack from beginning to end, scoring five goals in the fourth and winning 12-10.
The Hoos got out to an early lead against No.9 Clemson on Saturday, but this time, they fell victim to Clemson’s own fourth quarter blitz, falling on the opposite end of Wednesday’s score, 12-10.
Virginia welcomes James Madison University on Wednesday at 6 p.m., before facing Louisville on the round at noon Saturday.
Despite a frustrating start to the season, the Virginia men’s team gave No. 10 Maryland a scare on the road in College Park last Saturday, before falling 13-12. They kept pace with Maryland throughout regulation, even putting four past the Terps in the fourth to force overtime. Three periods later though, one defensive lapse cost the Hoos the game.
The Hoos will play at Scott Stadium on Saturday morning against Utah at 11 a.m.
Tennis
The No. 2 Virginia men’s team welcomed the Duke Blue Devils on Friday to Boars Head in Charlottesville, surrendering only one point to the visitors and winning the match 4-1.
The North Carolina Tar Heels fared slightly better on Sunday, taking the doubles point and one further singles matchup, but Virginia still won 4-2.
A road trip to face the other two North Carolina teams awaits the Hoos next weekend, with a Friday matchup in Raleigh against NC State, and a Sunday tilt against Wake Forest in Winston-Salem.
Meanwhile, the No. 21 women’s team took down No. 19 Clemson on the road in South Carolina 4-2. They finished up the road trip successfully with a win in Atlanta against Georgia Tech 4-1. Up next for Virginia is a Florida road trip, stopping in Tallahassee on Friday to face Florida State, and Coral Gables Sunday to battle Miami.
Track & Field
Three Hoos took home first-team All-American honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville over the weekend.
Jeremiah Nubbe earned second place with a school record of 24.29 in the weight throw.
Keyandre Davis joined his teammate with a strong throw of 22.84, good for fourth place. Before Nubbe and Davis, only one another Wahoo earned First Team All-American honors in the weight throw.
Finally, with a time of 3.59.30, Gary Martin took home fourth in the men’s mile race, earning First Team All-American honors.
The outdoor season kicks off Saturday at Lannigan Field with the Virginia Opener.
Golf
Cavalier star Ben James tied for fourth as an individual at The Hayt in Ponte Vedra, Florida, shooting –2 under par and earning his sixth top five finish of the season. Virginia as a team finished sixth, between North Carolina in fifth and South Carolina in seventh.
Baseball
Following a successful trip to North Carolina and taking down the Tar Heels, Virginia returned to Disharoon Park to welcome the William & Mary Tribe last Tuesday. The Tribe showed well against ACC opposition, and despite some nervous moments, the Cavaliers took down their opponents 9-7.
They rode this momentum into the Baseball iteration of the Commonwealth Clash this past weekend. Strong performances from Henry Zatkowski and Max Stammel earned Virginia a series victory in the first two games of the series.
However, much the same to how the Hokies faced Georgia Tech two weeks ago, Virginia Tech struck quickly and denied the Hoos the sweep, winning game three 6-3.
