CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – No. 10 Virginia field hockey picked up two ranked wins over the weekend, downing No. 6 Wake Forest 1-0 in overtime on the road Friday, then coming home to beat No. 20 Monmouth 4-3.

Keeper Nilou Lempers made just two saves in 63 minutes of action as the Cavaliers’ defense held strong.  On offense, the Cavaliers peppered Wake keeper Ruby Butterfield with nine shots to no avail at the other end, with Caitlin Connell finally breaking the deadlock in overtime to give Virginia the win.

The Cavaliers then faced the Hawks in their penultimate regular season matchup Sunday afternoon. The ‘Hoos took an early advantage before the Hawks scored two unanswered goals to take a 2-1 lead.  However, scored three unanswered goals in the second half, scored by Marisa Fahning, Riley Savage, and Connell respectively, gave the lead back to the Cavaliers.  Despite a final goal conceded, Virginia held on to win 4-3.

Virginia will host Louisville in its final match of the regular season on Friday at 3 p.m.

Swimming

In a showcase of Virginia swimming’s prestige, UVA hosted the Short Course Meters World Prep Pro Am over the weekend, in which both current and past Cavaliers put on a staggering show for the standing room only crowd.

Superstar swimmers Kate Douglass and Alex Walsh both took home impressive victories, with Douglass winning the 100m freestyle with the world’s fastest time of 2026, 50.20. Walsh took the win in the 100m breaststroke in 1:04.34, as well as the 400m IM in 4:27.12.

Douglass put up another of 2026’s best times in the 200m breaststroke, taking the top step in 2:15.65.

Finally, Gretchen Walsh treated the crowd to a world record swim in her specialty, the 50m freestyle, hitting a 22.75, breaking a short-course world record that she previously set at 22.83.  Walsh also sprinted to a 50m butterfly victory, finishing in 24.02.

Later that weekend in Charlottesville, UVA faced Florida in a dual meet.  Madi Mintenko, Katie Grimes, and Anna Moesch each earned a pair of race wins in a victory for the No.1 UVA women’s team over No. 10 Florida.  Thomas Heilmann, David King, and Maximus Williamson won two races apiece in a losing effort for the No. 10 Virginia men’s team against the No. 3 Gators.

Golf

Women’s golf took home a strong second place finish at the Stanford Intercollegiate in California last Friday through Sunday, finishing 9-under-par as a unit, two strokes ahead of USC but not close enough to catch the first-place Stanford.

Coming off an individual victory in Chicago, fourth-year Jaclyn LaHa finished in a joint-third place on the leaderboard with a 9-under-par.  Lilly Reitter and Zoey Cusack both also finished in the top ten; Reitter finished joint-sixth at 5-under, and Cusack in joint-ninth at 4-under.

The Cavalier will finish their fall schedule at the Keswick Cup on Oct. 26.

Men’s golf finished ninth at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate over the weekend. Josh Duangmanee and Vaughn McMeans were the Cavaliers’ highest finishers, shooting 1-under-par and finishing in 15th position.

Their fall schedule will end at the Steelwood Country Club in Alabama from Oct. 31-Nov.1.

Soccer

AJ Smith, Parker Sloan, Brendan Lambe, and Zeus Rankin each scored in men’s soccer’s 4-0 over Gardner-Webb on Tuesday, as the defense kept a clean sheet in the face of the Bulldogs’ attack.

That set up a clash on the road against Duke, which ended in a 3-0 loss for the Cavaliers.  Virginia keeper Caleb Tunks made six saves while allowing three goals, while Duke keeper Max Deisenhofer made justone save in the shutout.

Virginia heads to New York to take on Syracuse next Saturday at 1 p.m. in the penultimate contest of the regular season.

Women’s soccer squared off against Virginia Tech on Friday in Blacksburg.  The Cavaliers’ defense absorbed the pressure from the Hokies throughout the game before Ella Carter broke through Virginia Tech’s defense late in the second, sending Sophia Bradley a clear look at goal. Bradley sent the ball into the net to give Virginia a 1-0 lead with five minutes left in regulation, and the Cavaliers walked away with a 1-0 win.

The Cavaliers will return home Thursday to take on Clemson at 7 p.m.

 Volleyball

Women’s soccer was not the only team to face Virginia Tech last week, as Virginia volleyball played a home-in-home against the Hokies.

The Cavaliers hosted first on Wednesday.  Virginia started the match with the momentum, taking victories in the first two sets, each by a score of 25-19, before dropping set three 25-22. But UVA secured a close 25-23 win in the fourth set, securing the 3-1 victory.

The away leg in Blacksburg did not go the way of Virginia, as the Hokies swept the Cavaliers 3-0 to split the series on Saturday.

Next, Virginia heads to Syracuse next Friday for a road matchup at 6 p.m.
