CULPEPER, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – VDOT is continuing its response to a major winter storm that dumped eight inches to a foot of snow and sleet across Culpeper District over the last 36 hours, and says they’re actively engaged Tuesday in moving snow and ice off lower-volume secondary roads and neighborhood streets. They’re using salt and chemicals to treat icy patches.

VDOT says many drivers heeded the call to stay home during the storm which allowed crews more efficient access to interstate, primary and high-volume secondary roadways.  Drivers should use caution as they venture out. They advise a roadway may look clear, but the extreme low temperatures over the next several days means ice and snow will persist in some areas. Do not follow too closely and watch for VDOT crews working to clear and treat the roads. Once the sun sets and the temperature falls further, a refreeze will blanket some roadways with black ice which can be especially treacherous.

If you plan to drive, allow extra time for your trip and check 511.vdot.virginia.gov. Please map your route through to your destination because conditions can change rapidly. Local updates about conditions in VDOT’s Culpeper District are posted to X.com/VaDOTCulp. Visit VDOT’s winter weather page for more information about winter weather preparations and response.
