CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Making good on a commitment made more than a month ago, the University Guide Service at UVA has begun new historical tours. The tours began again January 24 after the University shut down its sanctioning of the tours last fall. In a December 4 editorial in Cavalier Daily, University Guide Service co-chairs Davis Taliaferro and Jack Giese, along with co-chair Ella Sher, wrote “we believe that student-led tours are integral to the process of telling the University’s history and that our suspension has only caused harm to both the organization and the University writ large. As such, we are announcing our return to giving historical tours independent of the University administration.

University Guide Service have announced in Cav Daily the historical tours have restarted Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 11am. They state they parted from the University with that December 4 letter “to independently reinstate historical tours”. They continue working with the administration to reinstate admissions tours. UVA Spokesperson Bethanie Glover confirms with Cav Daily the service is no longer considered to be acting on behalf of the University.

“Any individual may give a tour of the University, however, the Guide Service provides tours on the University’s behalf through a special status agreement.” Glover said. “They are free to resume historic tours as individuals, separate from the Guide Service agreement and name.”
