State Police to run Operation DISS-rupt on I-64

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Ten months after the last one, Virginia State Police according to a Wednesday release will be doing Operation DISS-rupt on all 299 miles of Interstate 64 Thursday and Friday.

The initiative along 64 was last done April 3 and 4, 2025.

State Police spokesman Matt Demlein did not have the after-event numbers for that one.

Demlein said, “DISS is an acronym… D for ‘distracted driving’, I for ‘impaired driving’. S for ‘speed compliance’, and another S for ‘seat belt safety’.”

“According to preliminary data, Virginia saw a decrease in traffic fatalities in 2025,” said Captain David Edwards, Commander of the Virginia State Police Salem Field Division. “We want that trend to continue, and by being visible, troopers remind people of the things safety measures they need to take do to remain safe while driving.”

Preliminary data indicates 46 persons have died in a traffic crash on a Virginia roadway so far this year as of Feb. 3, according to the release.

In addition, 13 pedestrians have been struck and killed in Virginia between Jan. 1, 2026, and Feb. 3, 2026.

State Police said the operation’s goal is to achieve zero fatal crashes during designated enforcement periods and to reduce the total number of crashes on our interstates for the calendar year by 10%.

The focus of troopers during DISS-rupt is ditching distractions by enforcing Virginia’s “Hands Free” mobile device law, looking for DUI, complying with speed limits, and seat belt safety.
