CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – A man who wielded a knife at a motorist Sunday was involved in an incident of road rage, and not an attempted carjacking, police now believe.

At approximately 12:58 p.m. Sunday, Charlottesville Police Department received a report of a knifepoint attempted carjacking at the corner of University Ave. and 14th Street, according to a safety alert issued by University of Virginia Police.

CPD’s investigation subsequently determined it was a road rage incident that escalated, and the incident did not actually occur at the reported location, according to an update UVA issued. It is unclear where the situation unfolded.

“It was determined that this was not an attempted robbery/carjacking as it was initially reported, but instead a road rage incident that escalated further,” according to the UVA update.

CPD has not released any information about the incident or investigation.
