Margaret Jean Haugen (aka Marge), previously Margaret Jean Dobbie, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2024 at the age of 97. Born on October 13, 1927 in London, England, she lived most of her early life in Derby, England. She met her future husband, Roger Haugen, an American soldier during WWII while he was stationed in Derby. She was a war bride, traveling on the Marine Falcon war bride ship in 1947 to NYC. She lived with relatives until Roger joined her and they continued to live in NYC for many years, where she was a wife, mother, and worked as a secretary. She became a naturalized US citizen in 1959. Roger’s employment took them to Palatine, Illinois when the children were in high school. She and Roger later relocated to Washington Township, NJ, and eventually retired in Charlottesville, VA, her home for many years. She was very active with the Charlottesville Senior Center where she had many friends. Marge’s passion for knitting led her to teach knitting classes along with knitting hats and scarfs for charity. She was preceded in death by her parents, Malcolm and Mary (aka Maisie) Dobbie, and her husband Roger.

She is survived by her children: Christine Haugen (Vermont) and Val Miraglia (Alaska) as well as her sister Roberta Anne Grob, 2 grandchildren, Eryn Miraglia and Seth Miraglia, 4 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was living at the Martha Jefferson House in Charlottesville when she died.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The Center at Belvedere (formerly the Charlottesville Senior Center) or a charity of your choice in her memory.
