CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – An officer-involved shooting at a Staunton Walmart left a man dead Tuesday night, according to the Virginia State Police.
At the request of the Staunton Police Department, VSP is investigating the incident that occurred at approximately 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at the store on 1028-C Richmond Ave. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
State Police said Tuesday night they were working to notify next of kin and process the scene.
Having the state police investigate officer-involved shootings is standard practice for Virginia law enforcement.
On June 20, Charlottesville Police exchanged gunfire with a fugitive near the city’s Market Street Park. CPD referred that case to the VSP for investigation. On July 9, the two officers who were involved in the shootout were cleared of any criminal wrongdoing by the VSP.
