CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) -The Louisa County Sheriff’s Office is mourning, and condolences are being sent from all over Central Virginia, after the death over the weekend of the sheriff’s office’s most senior K9, Ally.

Among her many assignments over the past six years, Ally aided in the search for evidence following the 2022 shooting at the University of Virginia that took the lives of three football players. Ally located evidence including a firearm.

“(Ally) passed surrounded by those who loved her most and has left behind a legacy of service, courage, and unwavering devotion to the community she faithfully served,” according to a social medial post from the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office.

The 7-year-old bloodhound, who came to Louisa from Buffalo, N.Y., and was handled by Lt. Patrick Sheridan, was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer in October.

“At home, K9 Ally was a beloved member of the Sheridan family,” the post said. “She found joy in running and playing, especially with her best friend, Tilly, a 14-year-old Boston Terrier. Her gentle spirit, loyalty, and boundless affection were felt by all who knew her.”

Ally demonstrated an aptitude for the service on which she embarked, according to the post.

“At just 11 months old, she earned her first certification with the Virginia Police Work Dog Association, an early testament to the remarkable career that would follow,” the post said. “Over the course of her service, K9 Ally worked more than 630 calls for service, including missing persons investigations, break-ins, and public demonstrations. She assisted more than 31 jurisdictions and received countless letters of commendation in recognition of her dedication, reliability, and extraordinary work ethic.”

Albemarle County Police were among those who shared condolences after Ally’s death.

“ACPD extends its deepest sympathies to the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office for the loss of K-9 Ally,” the department posted on its social media account. “Ally assisted our department on numerous investigations, always working with determination, skill, and heart. Her contributions made a real difference for our agency and the communities we serve, and we are grateful for the many times she answered the call alongside us.”

The Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office posted, “Our deepest condolences to the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office, Lieutenant Sheridan, and the Sheridan family on the loss of K9 Ally.”

“Ally and her handler answered the call for Fluvanna County countless times on holidays, in the middle of the night, and whenever help was needed. Her dedication to Fluvanna County has made a real difference in keeping our residents safe, and we are truly grateful for her service and sacrifice.”
