Kochis said community walk the day before prompts information about Friday night Orangedale shootings

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Charlottesville Police Chief Mike Kochis said they’ve received a lot of videos in relation to the July 4 night Orangedale shootings, and they’re making great progress on the case. He told WINA Morning News these videos, along with witness conversations with those in the neighborhood at the time, are leading investigators to IDs of assailants and building the cases against them. Kochis said it was a case of two gangs with a beef with each other, and having a shootout across street at each other with multiple people around. He said it was done with a reckless disregard for human life, and it didn’t matter there were other people, including children, around at the time.

Kochis said he and some neighborhood officers had done a community walk on Orangedale Thursday, the day before the incident.

“We were out there Thursday because we know Orangedale has had a block party for years, and haven’t had anything like this occur, and we hand out business cards, some educational materials about what the city ordinance is when it comes to fireworks and stuff like that. And, thankfully, some of those folks we gave business cards actually have been calling us with information,” Kochis said.

He said this is the byproduct of work the department has been doing in neighborhoods in these walks for years.

“Those relationships, those walks, what we do, have been really helpful in trying to bring justice to some of these families. We have families who will be dealing with significant trauma with what happened down there,” Kochis said.
