CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Former Commonwealth Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, whose appointment to the the University of Virginia Board of Visitors has been blocked by the Virginia Senate, will be the guest speaker at The Lodge at Old Trail’s next Third Thursday event, on Sept. 18.

According to an announcement from The Lodge at Old Trail, a Crozet senior living community, Cuccinelli’s speech is titled, “The Many Problems with Ranked Choice Voting and Other Voting Schemes.

Ranked Choice Voting is used to determine nominees in party primary elections. Instead of picking a single nominee, voters rank candidates in order of preference and can rank as many or as few candidates as they like. All first-choice candidates are counted. If nobody wins a majority, the candidate with the fewest first choice votes is eliminated. Second choice votes from voters whose preferred candidate was eliminated are transferred to those corresponding candidates. If there’s still no candidate with enough votes to win, the process is repeated until there’s a clear winner.

Cuccinelli calls the complex method of picking a nominee a scheme and would like to see Virginia’s primary elections return to traditional voting.
