CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for temperatures in the mid-90s with the heat index between 105-109 degrees on Wednesday and the City of Charlottesville announced cooling centers that will be open through Friday.
The city has cooling centers at Key Recreation Center at 800 E. Market St, which will be open from noon-9 p.m., the JMRL downtown branch at 201 E. Market, open for noon-8 p.m., and at Tonsler Recreation Center at 500 Cherry Ave., open from 9 a.m.-9 p.m.
The Wednesday heat advisory is from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. and includes Charlottesville and Albemarle, Nelson, Greene, Madison, Culpeper, and Orange counties.
The city heating shelter advisory recommended staying hydrated, limiting outdoor activities, spending as much time in air-conditioned buildings, dressing appropriately in lightweight, loss-fitting and light-colored clothing, checking on vulnerable individuals like the elderly, children and those with chronic illnesses, and never leaving children or pets in parked cars, even with the windows slightly open.
The National Weather Service forecast for Thursday is a high of 97 with heat index as high as 104, and Friday with a high of 94.
