University of Virginia Men’s Basketball Head Coach Tony Bennett is Retiring

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) –UVA Men’s Head Basketball Coach Tony Bennett is retiring after 15 seasons leading the University of Virginia’s men’s basketball team.

Bennett, who has served as head coach at UVA since 2009, leaves with a 364-136 record at Virginia, highlighted by the Cavaliers’ historic 2019 NCAA Championship win.

During his tenure, Bennett’s teams earned two ACC Tournament titles, six ACC regular-season championships, and appeared in 10 NCAA tournaments.

Bennett was named ACC Coach of the Year four times, in 2014, 2015, 2018, and 2019.

Before joining UVA, Bennett led Washington State to a 69-33 record and two NCAA tournament appearances. His overall coaching record stands at 433-169 across 18 seasons, and he is a three-time National Coach of the Year.

He will officially announce the retirement at a press conference scheduled for Friday, Oct. 18, at 11 a.m. in the John Paul Jones Arena dining hall.
