CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The Albemarle County Christmas tree recycling program began Friday and runs through Jan. 18.

A county social media post said Albemarle Parks and Recreation will operate eight drop-off sites from 7 a.m. through dark each day.

The recycled trees will be chipped into mulch, which will be available for free starting January 19, the day after the collections stop, at Darden Towe Park and Crozet Park.

The Parks & Rec webpage noted since the program launched in 1988, they have “collected an average of 2,300 trees annually that yield over 110 cubic yards of chips”.

“Christmas tree recycling reduces the impact on our landfill and helps residents find a place to dispose of a large and cumbersome item.”
