Embezzlement, money laundering charges in Lake of the Woods Association case

On August 30, 2018, the Orange Sheriff’s Office was advised that an embezzlement from the Lake of the Woods Association had occurred. Officials from the association advised that approximately $94,000.00 had been taken from the Lake of the Woods Association funds by a former employee.

After extensive investigation, it appears that an amount more than $450,000.00 was embezzled from the Lake of the Woods Association over a period of four years. The Orange Sheriff’s Office has completed their investigation and on March the 25, 2019 Investigator Ryan Brown presented evidence to an Orange County Grand Jury. As a result of the evidence presented, Roy C. Mayberry, age 46, of Stafford Co. VA was indicted on 8 counts of Va. Code Section 18.2-246.3, Money Laundering and 7 counts of Va. Code Section 18.2-95 and 18.2-111, Embezzlement.

On March 26, 2019, Roy C. Mayberry was arrested at his home in Stafford County Va. with assistance from the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.

Assisting Investigator Brown in this case was Senior Financial Investigator Mark P. de Almedia from the Virginia Attorney General’s Office.

Mr. Mayberry is currently being held in the Central Va. Regional Office on no bond.
