(AFTON -WINA) State Police are blaming a weekend crash on Afton Mountain in Nelson County on heavy fog and icy road conditions. It involved the driver of a tractor-trailer who lost control of his vehicle at around 4:30 a.m. Sunday and it overturned in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 64 at mile marker 100. A tour bus that was in the eastbound lane was unable to avoid the tractor-trailer and struck it, splitting the tractor-trailer in half.
There were 20 passengers and a driver on the bus. The drivers of the tractor-trailer and tour bus were among 15 people who were taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center. Four others were transported to Augusta Health.
The tractor-trailer driver whose cargo included U.S. mail is 44-year-old James Proffitt of Suffolk. The driver of the bus was 62-year-old Andrew L. Burruss of Keswick, who drives for Silver Linings Tours of Troy.
There are no reported fatalities, and the injuries range from serious to minor. There were at least seven other minor crashes that occurred in the eastbound lanes of the interstate immediately following the first crash. Those drivers were not injured.
