Join us for the third program in our Fighting for Freedom program series to learn about Americans who fought in the Civil War.
On November 19, 1863, President Lincoln consecrated the Union graves at Gettysburg in the name of a “new birth of freedom.” Even as enslaved people and white Unionists waged a war in the name of freedom, so too did Confederates claim that theirs was a war for liberty. UVA History professor Caroline Janney will explore how the legacy of the American Revolution permeated the Civil War at the national, state, and local levels.
