The Rockfish Wildlife Sanctuary is a nonprofit wildlife rehabilitation organization serving Central Virginia. The Sanctuary cares for over 900 injured and orphaned native animals every year, a number that has been rising annually due to the impacts of climate change and urban expansion throughout Virginia. The organization also has a robust education program featuring their team of ten charming non-releasable education ambassador animals, like Rosie the Black Vulture and Leonard the Virginia opossum. With a gorgeous indoor facility, dozens of outdoor enclosures nestled across 20 quiet, wooded acres in Nelson County, and a team of 5 licensed wildlife rehabilitators on staff, the Rockfish Wildlife Sanctuary is uniquely poised to provide recuperating wild animals with a natural and safe refuge to call home while they prepare for release back to the wild. 2024 marks the Sanctuary’s 20th year serving Virginian wildlife, and the nonprofit group will be hosting multiple celebratory and educational events throughout the year. “We are thrilled to come out to Albemarle Ciderworks to celebrate the importance of native wildlife. Like Albemarle Ciderworks’ heritage apples, our wild neighbors have so much intrinsic value and deserve our admiration – and our protection! On January 5th, a squad of our education ambassador animals will visit Albemarle Ciderworks so folks can meet them up close and learn more about how they each help our beautiful ecosystems. The family-friendly afternoon will feature not only a wildlife presentation with RWS but also a guided nature walk through some of the lovely trails at Albemarle Ciderworks.”
